A variation on the style of the plum gown from POTC. I found a steal of a deal at Walmart of all places on the fabric and was only going to proceed with a fun somewhat period style gown and then I felt like making one similar to the gown in the movie.
The bodice isn't shaped as high and I need to alter the point and there are grommets instead of a busk and frogs and of course the color is not plum but violet but the shape and style are similar.
I used a violet velour, fully lined the gown with a sparkled sheer fabric except for the front bodice pieces where you see the lace overlay, added the lace cuffs, gold trim and mother of pearl buttons.
I'm still gloating on the $2.00/yd deal I got on the fabric (I'm making a cloak too!)..sometimes they do have some good things there if you look but, usually I purchase fabric online. If I had wanted to go with a similar fabric to the film I found a beautiful tafetta silk for less than $20.00/yd.
Hope you're all doing well!

Very nice. Yeah, I love the costumes for PotC. Penny Rose, wasn't it? Walmart sells fabric? That was really a steal. I love cloaks! I have been meaning to make one forever! The only thing is, of course, the fabric and the fact that my sewing really is just... sad... but anyway, you did a nice job with the whole 18th-century aspect.

Thank you.
I've had so many requests for those dresses but not many willing to pay what they are worth.
The gold dress, I've seen the actual fabric available for over $90/yd...gah!
*nod* yeah, the Walmart we have sells quite a lot, most of it is nothing I'd use but sometimes they carry some lovely things and lately they've been carrying faux fur too which is loads of fun.
I flipped when I saw purple velour for $2 and it was 60" wide which was even better so I walked out with about 14 yards for super cheap. Any of my other sources start at $5 + so I'm happy.
I had a really warm wool cape with a wonderful kasha lining but not any more so I'm needing to replace it with a few different ones. Actually if you have the patience a cape isn't too terrible to recreate so you may be able to do it without too much trouble. The only thing is ensuring the lining hangs nicely and that you gather the hood well.
I should really get around to making more undergarments one of these days but I personally hate all the petticoats and cages under these dresses however, for all the Civil War garments and the 18th century garb they are a necessity.

Yeah.. Ugh, that's why it's almost a relief to be a peasant for costumes like for the Ren Faire too, even if they aren't always as impressive. Not so many layers!

You know I respect the people who enjoy doing peasant garb or beggars or thieves I mean that's great fun.
There was a guy a few years back at one of the fairs doing the 'leper/beggar' routine and he was a riot, he was cajoling and chiding and then being sly with innuendo when the 'rich' would walk by.
Layers are uncomfortable!
